Book Description

The response to the effects of climate change stimluates extensive construction activity everywhere and the primary material for such development is concrete. A vital way to mitigate the drawbacks of global development is by improving the performance of concrete whilst lowering its carbon footprint. This book presents a wide-ranging series of responses to these issues, at both the general and specialist level, with 90 papers on innovation, research and case studies in cement and concrete materials (particularly waste materials from other processes), systems, design and construction techniques. The papers are grouped under four themes: Cements and admixtures: future directions and performance; Energy and resources: where next?; Architecture and engineering: appropriate design; Developing world: responsibilities in changing environments and demands. Each theme starts with keynote papers by leading experts in their fields. This volume forms Volume 1 of the six-volume set of proceedings of the International Congress 'Concrete: construction's sustainable option', organised by the Concrete Technology Unit of the University of Dundee in July 2008, and available as a set, ref. EP92, ISBN 978-1-84806-043-2.
