The purpose of this guide [published in 1992] is to assist those who may wish to use the timber frame construction method but who are not experienced in, or familiar with, its principles. It attempts to point clients and specifiers towards best practice so that they will be able to produce houses with adequate long-term performance. It explains the fundamental principles of timber frame construction, based on the platform frame method, which is the commonest form currently used in the UK, but the general principles also apply to other timber frame methods. A variety of technical contractual and organisational features, which are considered important to achieving a successful timber frame scheme, are reviewed. The guide is concerned with building practice and regulations in England and Wales, and is based on BRE surveys of new construction and the refurbishment of some timber-frame housing built over the last 20 years [i.e. the 1970s and 1980s].
