Book Description

This Information Paper supplements the guidance given in BS5328:Part 2, BRE Digest 330, and Concrete Society Technical Report TR 30. It covers some alternative methods for minimising the risk of damaging alkali-silica reaction (ASR) in concrete, including the use of some Type II additions (silica fume, fly ash conforming to BS EN 450 and metakaolin) and one type of admixture (lithium salts). It also recommends that air-entrainment is not an adequate effective method for minimising the risk of ASR in concrete. This guidance demonstrates that, in many cases, these alternative methods to minimise ASR can enable the use of higher alkali content concretes than is currently possible using existing specifications. 8 pages.
