This report examines innovation in concrete frame construction over the past 10 years and looks into the future to predict likely drivers for future innovation. It draws on the proceedings of a workshop held at BRE and detailed interviews with industry practitioners.
Research from the European Concrete Building Project at Cardington is shown to have had a positive impact on the concrete frame construction industry and many of the innovations trialled there are regarded as important by industry. Nine individual innovations from the project are discussed, with industry comment on whether they were used in practice and what were the major barriers to adoption.
Among other innovations (not part of the Cardington project) that have changed the way in which concrete frames are designed and constructed, lightweight formwork systems and computer-based software tools were identified by the industry as having had the greatest impact.
Major trends and issues likely to be the focus of innovation in the concrete frame construction industry over the coming decade are green issues, efficiency of production and aspects of labour and training. 44 pages.
